Technical Director position - Roughan & O'Donovan

Company Overview

Hays Civil Engineering is delighted to be partnering on a retained basis with Roughan & O’Donovan (ROD), a firm of civil, structural, and environmental engineering consultants.

The company has been established for 50 years. Current annual revenues exceed €20M and employee numbers exceed 200. ROD already has two offices in Dublin and a UK-based office in Otley, near Leeds. There are 12 shareholders of ROD, all of whom are full-time employees of the company.

ROD is in the process of setting up a regional office based in Cork and is seeking to hire a Technical Transport Director to oversee this new team.

Current projects in the Cork region include:

* BusConnects Cork – Southwest Scheme – Ballincollig, Bishopstown and Togher to City Centre
* Cork Area Commuter Rail Project
* Dursey Island Cablecar
* West Cork Greenways – Skibereen to Baltimore, Schull and Drimoleague
* Waterford North Quays Infrastructure Project

ROD’s projects encompass major highways and bridges, Active Travel, SUDS, Environment and Geotechnical, all with a keen focus on sustainability. Other major ongoing commissions include:

* A5 Western Transport Corridor, Derry
* BusConnects Dublin – Ballymun / Finglas, Ringsend and Kimmage Core Bus Corridors
* Clyde Western River Crossing, Glasgow
* HSE Decarbonisation Project
* Clontarf to City Centre Project, Dublin
* West Clare Railway Greenway
* M50 Variable Speed Limits ITS Project

ROD has an extensive portfolio of past projects in the Highways & Transportation sector in Ireland and the UK, having provided services to public-sector, contractor and PPP clients on more than 500km of motorway projects. ROD is also a market leader in Urban Realm and Active Travel project design in Ireland and has also been requested to provide training in this sector in the UK based on our large portfolio of completed projects. Sustainability and liveability are cornerstones of our design philosophy, and we strive to incorporate circular economy principles in all of our project designs. ROD is seeing a large number of developing projects in the South of Ireland, and as such are seeking a Technical Director to further their growth from a Cork base.

This role is ideal for an individual with a proven ability to provide technical leadership, to develop professional teams, and to provide high quality service to clients. The successful candidate will hold a senior transportation design leadership position in an engineering consultancy and will have the ambition to lead that discipline within the expanding ROD team. The position will be based in Cork.

Responsibilities

* Provide leadership for the transportation team, overseeing, supporting, advising and coaching the engineering professionals.
* Supervise highways and transportation projects, lead design evolution and checking with full technical responsibility for deliverables, assign responsibilities and allocate resources efficiently.
* Lead business development initiatives in the Cork and Munster region, drawing on head office support.
* Be part of the management team in the ROD Transportation Group, including organising inputs to projects in Dublin/Otley and leading bidding in Ireland and the UK.
* Maintain excellent levels of customer service.
* Report to the Board of Directors at ROD.
* Undertake group-wide management functions allocated by the Board.

Required Skills and Experience

* A Chartered Engineer with a university degree.
* Excellent technical skills in the design of highways, streets, active travel and transportation projects.
* Experienced Bid Manager, excellent bid writing and tender price estimation skills.
* Commercial and financial acumen.
* Excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
* Capable of representing the company with clients and external parties.
* Experience of traffic network analysis is desirable but not essential.
